Province Cusco: places, tours and sights

Cusco Department links the Andean highlands, valleys, and transition zones to the Amazon, featuring iconic sites like the archaeological park of Machu Picchu, the archaeological site of Sacsayhuamán, and the Manu National Park. The best travel season is from April to October in the highlands and from May to September in the Amazonian areas, with frost nights possible at higher elevations in May and from August through September. With over 30 protected areas and numerous cultural heritage sites, Cusco offers diverse landscapes and deep history for travelers to explore.

Cusco stands out for its dominant low hill forest landscape and the presence of navigable rivers such as the Rio Kumpirushiato, with elevations ranging dramatically from 300 to 6248 meters. It holds a remarkable concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, totaling 106, underscoring its high level of cultural and historical protection. The region celebrates the Festividad del Señor de Los Temblores, a distinctive Festival unique to this area. Cusco is also home to the endemic species Telmatobius timens and is known for the traditional craft Artesania de Maras and the typical dish Chipata - Akiparenshi.

Best time to visit the Cusco region

The Cusco region brings together several climate zones with distinct travel seasons. The core is the Andean highlands; the transition to Amazonian transition follows different patterns.

Recommended: Apr–Oct

Less favorable: Jan–Mar, Dec, especially for trekking and overland travel

Andean highlands

Main climate zone

Best time: Apr–Oct

Typical destinations: Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán, Pisac, Parque Arqueológico De Ollantaytambo

Note: From May to September, nights at higher elevations can get very cold.

Amazonian transition

Secondary climate zone

Best time: May to September

Typical destinations: Aguas Calientes Cañón de Timpia, Comunidad nativa Carpintero Kirigueti

Note: From November to March, heavy rainfall and high water levels can occur.

What does this mean for trip planning?

Travelers planning a classic visit to Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán, and Pisac should aim for April through October when trekking and exploring Inca routes run reliably. This period ensures the best conditions for high-altitude stages in the Andean highlands.

An important note: even in the driest phase, nights at higher elevations can get very cold. Warm clothing, including a jacket and hat, should definitely be packed.

Between November and March, the risk of landslides and road closures increases, so high-altitude legs should not be planned spontaneously; in the Amazonian transition areas, heavy rain and swelling rivers add extra challenges.
